Mounting & Framing

Mounting and framing your finished portrait will protect it and show it off to it's best. This can be carried out as part of your order, or by a suitable framer of your choice at a later date.

Acrylic portraits are very durable and may be framed with or without a mount or glass. Pastel portraits however require careful handling even after fixing and are best framed behind glass, but not in direct contact with it. A mount enables you to frame your portrait while retaining a gap between it's surface and that of the glass.

Portraits are done on a sympathetic background colour. Mounting offers the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between this colour and the surrounding wall colour, or to harmonise the portrait with other surrounding pictures through the use of similar mounts.

Mount and frame sizes need to be carefully matched to the size of portrait in order to maintain a suitable balance, e.g.: For a 16x12 picture the next suitable standard outer size for the mount would be 20x16, which would typically lead to an outer frame size of approx. 25x21.

For best effect mounts should normally be equal on all sides, or have equal sides, an equal or larger top, and a larger base - to account for perspective under typical hanging conditions. Frame mouldings should typically be equal or greater in width than the smallest width of mount.

The two images on this page show the difference that mounting and framing can make. In the absence of any specific colour considerations, grey or cream mounts tend to suit the majority of situations, as can be clearly seen here.

If the portrait is to hang alongside other framed images, every effort will be made to source a complimentary moulding Close-up images of the existing frame mouldings and details of frame & mount colours should be supplied at time of order. Where the portrait will be displayed amongst other pet portraits, photographs of these should be supplied to allow a sympathetic balance between the images.
